MIB3 Review

Movie trailer:

If you were born in the '80s or early '90s you may remember the first of the series, Men In Black, released in 1997.

It featured Will Smith as J and Tommy Lee Jones as K, both agents in a top-secret organization responsible for monitoring alien activity on dear old earth. (I still remember reading about the movie in The Hindu and pestering my father to accompany me to the movie.) Then came MIBII five years later. Very disappointing. The story had lost its charm and the freshness had worn off. Now for the third installment, MIB3 seemed to have picked up the slack and judging through trailers, had regained some promise. Let's see if this one holds up the reputation of the first.

Performances:
Will Smith: Right from the first part, he has been the life of the movie. As with the other parts, he attempts to deliver a performance worthy of his fame. He has the perfect set of expressions for J's role. The puns are in place. And so are the funny faces. Kaani ekkado edo missing. You feel something amiss in him throughout the movie. Maybe, the difference of 15 years takes its toll on his character. But, hey, he is still a lot of fun.

Tommy Lee Jones: The veteran returns as the original K. Sour-faced and reticent as ever, he still packs a punch in his character, and for once is relegated to no.3 in the movie. But the real find of the movie is

Josh Brolin: As a young and still jauntier Agent K, he has really impressed with his mannerisms and dialogue delivery pretty close to TLJ. It's evident that he has studied the character very well and does his best to do justice. He gives the movie a shot in the arm, and elevates it above boredom and mediocrity. A most convincing performance indeed.

Jemaine Clement: The bad-ass villain Boris the Animal is way way short of badness. Cliched lines, predictable character development don't help here. But hey, the plot says so and still, a performance he won't regret.

Technical aspects: As evident from the trailer, Boris the animal has escaped from lunar prison, has time-travelled and killed Agent K. Now, it is up to J to go back in time, save K and the earth from an alien invasion, which K was to prevent. Yes, the story is that simple. Well, it has got time travelling machines, super fast unicycles and arcnet devices which need to be deployed from space. But, you get the idea.

The engrossing screenplay is the grace of the movie, with action sequences aplenty, and some slick special effects hold you to your seats. Mind you, just slick, nothing special or oscar-worthy. The pace of this movie allows you just enough time to digest what's happening. This and some occasionally sprinkled humor ensure there are no yawns. The director, having already done the two prequels, evidently knows which buttons to press. There are plot-holes, a few glaring, some pardonable, like why Boris does not use his time-machine again, and why J does not use it again in the climax. The editing is satisfactory, with some scenes even in the official trailer evidently been cut out. What I felt was that MIB 2 failed due to the lack of fun, the lost novelty and because the element of surprise in Will Smith (on discovering aliens) and due attention to aliens and their lifestyles was missing. But, the director nearly proves my notion wrong. The story still has some entertainment potential in it.

Ahaa, aithe naakenti: Kunchem comedy, kunchem action, kunchem sentiment anni samapallalo undi.

Main ga last 4-5 years lo vachina technical advancements tho mana industry lonu ilanti movies easy ga teeyachu. Kaani enduku teeyatledu? (Sigga...bidiyama..gouravama :P) Audience ishtapadarana? Leka ee vidhamga stories lekana? Emaina opinion unte comment cheyyamani manavi.

Overall ga: A very entertaining  and enjoyable flick, surely WILL not match up to the original MIB. But, if you haven't seen the first two, or are willing to forget the first, you may have a delightful two hours on your hands! If not, "let's just agree to disagree"!!
